Why Do You Need a Driving Permit in Sri Lanka:

In Sri Lanka, driving without a local driving permit is a no-go, even if you have an international driver’s license. But fear not! Getting this permit is quite straightforward. It’s all about knowing the right steps and where to go.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Your Permit:

There are two types of permits you can obtain:

a. A temporary driving permit from the Department of Motor Traffic. (Validity: Maximum 1 year)

b. An endorsement of your International Driving Permit (IDP) by the Automobile Association of Sri Lanka. (Validity Maximum 06 Months)

If your license is in a language other than English you will have to get it translated by a sworn translator, preferably at your country's embassy.

Before heading out, make sure you have these documents:

  • Your valid driving license plus a photocopy. (option a & b)
  • Your passport and a photocopy of it. (option a & b)
  • Your International Driving Permit issued from your country of origin (option b only)
  • A copy of your Sri Lankan visa. (option a & b)
  • Some cash for the permit fee (about 1000 LKR per month or US$ 3 per month at the DMV, and US$ 50 at the Automobile Association. Prices are subject to change). (option a & b)

Let’s go over the steps for obtaining a driving permit from the Department of Motor Traffic (DMV):

If your license isn’t in English, you’ll need a translation. But if it is, head to the Department of Motor Traffic. It’s recommended to arrive early to avoid long line.

The Application Process and Collecting Your Permit:

Once at the department, you’ll be directed to various counters for document verification and payment. The staff are super helpful, so don’t hesitate to ask for assistance!

After completing the process, you’ll receive your temporary driving permit. This usually takes about an hour, but it’s worth the effort!

Alternative Option — IDP Endorsement:

If you have an IDP, you can get it endorsed by the Automobile Association of Sri Lanka. If you don't want to visit the DMV or the Automobile Association, contact Rooverr, and will assist you in obtaining an IDP endorsement online.
